1783The viceroy Caracciolo lays out the square and rings it with porticoes.

This was the Bucceria grande, the food market of the old city. In Palermo, vucciria went on to become the word for din.

The abbanniata was the sung cry the sellers used to call buyers over. The few putiari left do not call it any more.
